※ Route is still on planning. It might be changed.
This route is inspired by Oku no Hosomichi, one of Japan’s most iconic travel journals, written by the legendary haiku poet Matsuo Basho.

Riders will trace the footsteps of Basho’s historic journey, then continue onward through the land of his birth, before reaching the place where the great poet’s journey through life came to an end.

Along the way, you may start wondering just how many statues of Basho there are in Japan.

Ride independently. Travel Japan.

  • We will NOT provide sleeping facilities or designated rest areas at CPs.
This event will take place during one of Japan’s major holiday periods, so we strongly recommend booking your hotels along the way as early as possible.
  • We will not provide DNF support.
  • There will be no drop bag service.
  • We will not provide luggage storage.
  • Japan has excellent infrastructure for independent travel, including hotels, convenience stores, and reliable luggage delivery services.
  • In Japan, it is easy to send luggage from one hotel to the next using nationwide delivery services. You can also send your bike box or other travel luggage from Tokyo to your hotel in Osaka instead of carrying it along the route.
  • More information on how to use luggage delivery services in Japan will be provided before the event.

Hospitality

This is a self-supported ride, but we know it is nice to see someone during a long ride.
At a few locations along the route, we hope to offer riders a warm welcome and a little encouragement.
We are planning to have it at Sukagawa(May 1), Kisakata(May 3, 4) and Yamanaka Onsen(May 5, 6) in the day time.
If you pass too early, we will not arrive there yet, you might not meet with us! Please come slowly!

Finish Check-in

The finish Check-in will be staffed from 9:00 AM on May 7 to 12:00 AM on May 8, 2027.

Please plan your ride so that you arrive during this period. If you arrive too early, there will be nobody there to welcome you!

After-Party

We are planning an after-party on the afternoon of May 8.

Please keep your schedule open and join us to celebrate the end of the journey together!

Recommended Hotels

You can book hotels in Japan easily through major travel booking websites. We also believe that planning your own riding plan is part of the fun of an LRM.

Since every rider has a different pace and travel plan, and we would also like to avoid having too many riders concentrated at the same area/hotels, we will not provide specific hotel recommendations.

Many large hotel chains have 24-hour front desks, but if you expect to arrive late at night, please check the hotel’s latest check-in time and reception hours in advance.

Insurance for riders living outside Japan

Riders living outside Japan will be required to purchase the accident insurance designated by Audax Randonneurs Nihonbashi. The insurance period have to cover your entire trip, from departure from home until your return. Details and pricing will be announced later.

Equipment Requirements

All riders will be required to comply with the event’s equipment regulations.

Requirements are expected to include:

  • Helmet
  • Bell (Mandatory in Japanese law)
  • Two front lights
  • One rear light (two or more recommended), which must be steady (non-flashing)
  • Helmet-mounted rear light (flashing permitted)
  • Reflective vest
  • Bicycle transport bag / rinko bag

Rinko bags will also be available for purchase on the website during registration.

Why do I need a rinko bag?

No matter how well prepared you are, there is always a possibility that you may have to abandon the ride due to mechanical problems, illness, weather, or other unexpected circumstances.

In Japan, bicycles generally need to be packed in a rinko bag when using trains or other public transportation. You cannot assume that you will be able to take your bicycle on board as it is.

Even if you do not plan to use it, you may need it when things do not go according to plan.

Therefore, all riders must carry a rinko bag at all times during this event.

Will aerobars be allowed?

Yes, aerobars will be fully allowed. However, we just recommend not using them when riding behind someone or in urban areas, so that you can react quickly in the event of emergency braking. Be careful!

Can I participate on a Brompton?

Yes, you can. The route has plenty of climbing, though. If you still want to do 1,900 km on a Brompton, we certainly won’t stop you! (I don’t recommend it, though… :p)

Can I take my bicycle on the plane in Japan?

Yes. Most airlines allow bicycles as checked baggage, including on domestic flights such as Osaka to Tokyo. But, you will need to pack your bicycle in a rinko bag or another suitable bicycle travel bag or case. Rules, size limits, and fees vary by airline, so please check with your airline in advance.
